North Alabama's Unions Open Hiring for Organizer Position
Part-time Organizer
The North Alabama Area Labor Council (NAALC) is seeking a Part-time Organizer to support our organization and future Campaign Director for a community organizing campaign.
The ideal candidate will be outgoing and an effective communicator across multiple mediums (telephone, text, email, and social media). They will have some experience with community organizing, ideally in North Alabama.
Who We Are
The North Alabama Area Labor Council, AFL-CIO is a democratically elected body of union members that represent the interests of working people at the state and local level across seven counties in North Alabama.
What You’ll Do
The Organizing Intern, who is based in North Alabama and reports to the Campaign Director, is responsible for the following:
- Supporting the Campaign Director’s community organizing efforts
- Direct outreach to labor council delegates, affiliates, and other union members
- Updating community groups on campaign progress
- Support the planning of listening sessions
- Perform other duties as assigned

To be successful in this job, you will excel in four areas:
- Interpersonal communication and relationship building: The ideal candidate for this role is outgoing and skilled at direct communication. They are not afraid to make phone calls and strike up conversations with strangers.
- Curiosity: This type of campaign is new to our organization and North Alabama in general. The person in this role should be ready to ask thoughtful questions as well as figure out how to find answers on their own.
- Effective communication across multiple platforms and medium: In one day you may cold-call a union member in Gurley, follow up on a Reddit post from a worker in Decatur, and send an email update via Action Network to our community partners. Each type of communication deserves dignity and energy.
- Commitment to working class solidarity: You recognize that most everyone is working class, and deserves dignity and transparency from our political.
Knowledge of healthcare policy or prior experience in labor organizing are both plusses, but are not requirements.
If you were here right now, you would be:
- Calling NAALC delegates with campaign updates and turning them out to attend our next business meeting
- Identifying potential meeting locations for listening sessions (labor halls, community centers) and reaching out for information
- Sending thank you emails to facilitators and community partners after a listening session
- Following up with a commentor on a video on Facebook
What Else You Should Know
The NAALC will be operating under the fiscal sponsorship of Alabama Arise, which is responsible for administrative tasks including payroll.

The position is part-time and temporary through April 2027. The anticipated start date is mid September to early October. It is based in any county in North Alabama, but a significant amount of work will likely be focused in Huntsville. The role requires weekly travel across the region, at least once per week up to 100 miles. You must have working transportation. Reasonable travel cost reimbursements will be provided. The compensation for this position is $15-$20/hr for no more than 15 hours per week.
